MADISON, Wis. -- One Madison organization is hoping the generosity of others will help extend its own generosity.
Belinda Sanders recently moved back to Wisconsin and learned about a medical administrative training program at Madison's Urban League.
"It was like I was right there on time," said Sanders. "It was just meant for me."
Sanders graduated from the 14-week program in August and already has an internship in a career she loves.
"I've gained a sense of belonging and I've met some very wonderful people," said Sanders.
Madison's Urban League has helped countless people like Sanders, but now officials said that they're looking for some help of their own: A fundraising deadline for a new facility is looming.
"We are trying to close our campaign which is, we have $175,000 dollars left to fundraise and we need to raise that by Oct. 1 in order to receive a Kresge foundation grant," said board chairman Annette Miller.
In the next 10 days, the Urban League must raise $175,000 to reach their fundraising goal of $650,000 – doing so will allow them to receive a $380,000 grant.
The money will be used for a much larger, new building on Madison's south side.
"In the past, we've been able to help 5, 10, 15 people in some of our outreach efforts (per class)and we expect to double, triple that with the space that we have," said Miller.
Helping people like Sanders.
"Had it not come along I really don't know where I would be right now. I'd probably still be looking for a job and not having the knowledge that I gained from this program," said Sanders.
The Urban League's new center would be a part of the Villager Mall Campus on South Park Street. It would be a $4 million investment for the organization, officials said.
