The Urban League Movement
Founded in 1910, the Urban League grew out of a grassroots movement for freedom and opportunity. Madison, Wisconsin joined the Urban League movement in 1968.
Our Mission
To improve the social and economic conditions of African Americans, other people of color, and the economically disadvantaged in our community.
Our Movement
The National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads our nonprofit, nonpartisan, community-based movement. The heart of the Urban League movement is professionally staffed affiliates in over 100 cities in 34 states and the District of Columbia.
Our Strategic Empowerment Agenda:
-
College Readiness and Career Development: The Urban League is one of Dane County's largest providers of educational enrichment programs for our youth. We offer education programs which ensure that all students realize their dreams and aspirations.
-
Workforce Development: Through strategic alliances with local employers, Urban League programs train low-income individuals for better careers while simultaneously helping local companies build and diversify their workforce.
-
Equity Development: The Urban League operates an award-winning program that helps larger low-income families build stability and equity as they become first-time homeowners. New initiatives are underway to help spur new minority businesses while also generating new revenue to invest our social mission.
