The Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Breakfast is Dane County's oldest and largest family observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Nearly 200 students from middle and high schools all across Dane County are recognized for their outstanding academic accomplishments and volunteer service.
Outstanding Young Person Awards are presented by the Urban League to middle and high school students of color nominated by their school that exemplify a commitment to academics, extra-curricular activities, and community service.
In 2009, the Urban League distributed MLK Scholarships to seven high school seniors. Each year, the Madison Metropolitan School District announces their annual Mann Scholars at the Breakfast.
This event, traditionally hosted at Edgewood High School, sells out every year with over 700 attendees. The breakfast is open to the public and is one of the oldest and most well attended family observations of the King Holiday in Dane County. Children, families, elected officials, business leaders, school staff, and community members continue to make this a must attend event!
